Cosmere Reading Order: Every Brandon Sanderson Cosmere Book (21 Books)

21 books · 5 series pages · by Brandon Sanderson

Quick answer

New to the Cosmere? Start with The Final Empire (2006), the first Mistborn book. Sanderson says any of his five suggested starts works, so pick the one that sounds best; the order below keeps every series together.

Recommended reading order

This is our order, built from Sanderson's own advice (see the sources below). It is a suggestion, not the only way in. Optional novellas are marked.

  1. 1.Mistborn Era 1

Sanderson lists The Final Empire first among his suggested starting points. The trilogy is complete and its Era 2 sequels spoil it, so read all three first.

  2. 2.Elantris and Warbreaker

Two standalone novels. Our Stormlight guide notes that reading Warbreaker before the Stormlight books adds connections, though it is not required.

  3. 3.The Stormlight Archive

Read in order. Edgedancer and Dawnshard are optional novellas that matter for later books.

  4. 4.Mistborn Era 2 and Secret History

Sanderson says The Alloy of Law is an okay jumping-in spot but spoils the original trilogy, so it comes after Era 1. Secret History spoils the trilogy too and is a short optional novella.

  5. 5.The standalones

Sanderson's site lists these as Cosmere standalones. Each can be read on its own once you know the basics.

Cosmere reading order FAQ

Where do I start with the Cosmere?

Brandon Sanderson says it does not matter which Cosmere series you start with: Mistborn: The Final Empire, The Emperor's Soul, The Way of Kings, Elantris and Warbreaker are all fine starting points. We suggest The Final Empire (2006), the first Mistborn book. Start with The Final Empire (2006).

Do I need to read Mistborn before The Stormlight Archive?

No. Stormlight is part of Sanderson's Cosmere. Reading Mistborn and Warbreaker first adds connections but isn't required. Read each series in its own order: The Way of Kings is book 1 of The Stormlight Archive.

Should I read the Cosmere in publication order?

You can, but you do not have to. Publication order starts with Elantris (2005) and mixes the series together, as the table on this page shows. The recommended order above keeps each series together instead, which is how Sanderson says to read them: in sequence, starting at book 1.

How many Cosmere books are there?

This page lists 21 Cosmere books and novellas that we cover, across 5 series pages. It is not a complete bibliography: some short fiction is not listed here.
